According to Adam Rubin, the Mets will be interviewing DeMarlo Hale for the open manager position. Am I the only one who originally thought “DeMarlo” was Chip’s real first name? DeMarlo Hale has been with Boston the past few years, serving as a 3rd Base coach and also the past year as a bench coach with Terry Francona. You can read about DeMarlo Hale here.
Interesting position read online today: the Mets are busy interviewing inside and outside candidates this week and next. But are the Mets seriously considering an internal candidate like Wally Backman, Chip Hale or Ken Oberkfell? Or are they simply taking this opportunity to size up who is running the lower levels of the organization?
Great question!
So…what’s your take on this? Are the Mets seriously considering these candidates…or are they merely scoping out who is who for the time being?

You cannot be serious! I know you are a mets fan, but how could you not know the name of the coach on the redsox! What a joke.
I feel bad for you Mets fans. Gonna be nuclear winter in 2011 for you guys. Just sayin.
hey, I gotta confess, I did a double-take the first time I saw his name on the list too.
At first I wanted someone with a marquee name, like Lou Piniella, to come in. But after listening to Alderson, I think we have to give it some time and let him do his thing. Hey, he was able to get something out of Art Howe in Oakland. (And yeah yeah, I know NYC is not Oakland).
I never thought about them checking out the minor league managers…I thought they were really thinking about hiring one of them. But it makes sense, when else will they get a better time to sit down and listen to their ideas about managing. And some day, one of them may actually BE the manager in NY.
Also, I don’t think Backman is going to get the job, but I also wonder if he’ll get an offer to manage somewhere else. I think one thing a lot of people dont think about is “the day after” syndrome. You know, hey it would be great to bring in this great guy from a long time ago when we were good. But down the road, someone has to ask, “hey, how do we get rid of this guy? You know, he has a link to the past.”
It’s sticky and can be awkward. Which is why I don’t think Backman should get the job. Or Gary Carter. And HoJo probably should not have ever been hired to be the batting coach. Now he has to be let go. Too bad. Probably a nice guy.
