Mark Simon of ESPN New York wrote a column speculating about potential free agents for the Mets this off-season. Apparently he got Alderson’s drift they will not be players in the free agent sweepstakes this off-season. But yet, continues to suck up bandwidth with the thought that maybe — just maybe — Omar Minaya still runs the insane asylum.
Sorry, Mark, the grown-ups are now in charge. Recess is over. Met fans should simply expect nothing in terms of free agents and keep their expectations low. The Mets will not be active in the free agent market this off-season. Alderson could not be any clearer. It was insulting to listen each of the past few years to management state they were disappointed in the performance and vow to “be in on every key player.”
Really. All the Mets were used for was a stepping stone to a bigger payday elsewhere or a massively over-priced contract (like Ollie).
Instead, Simon’s article at ESPN (found here) cooks up some gems like David Eckstein. Are you for real? Eckstein is 36. You can do better than this:
“Eckstein would make an ideal No. 2 hitter behind a healthy Reyes. The threat of a hit-and-run would exist just about every time Eckstein came up with Reyes on base. According to Stats LLC, Eckstein put a ball in play 11 times on a hit-and-run last season, netting five base hits.”
I’ll give Simon credit: at least he realizes the team will likely be without K-Rod when the season begins and certainly will be without Johan Santana. I suspect Johan Santana will be out for most, if not all, of 2011.

Agreed. Those guys from ESPN are clueless Yankee-lovers it seems. Especially the Fordham guy (here’s a hint: “seeee ya”). I’d be totally OK with the team not spending any extra money this year, just work with what they have, maybe make a trade for someone. Tere is too much coming of the books after 2011 to start signing free agents all over again.
Not a die-hard met fan, actually. But what’s wrong with Michael Kay? I like the guy. More than sterling and suzyn waldman
